Matt Damon in 'The Odyssey'

Matt Damon has a long, perilous journey ahead of him in The Odyssey — and now audiences can get their first extended look at what's in store in director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated take on the ancient Greek epic.

On Monday, Universal Pictures unveiled a sweeping trailer for the star-studded movie, which was shot across the globe and entirely on large-format IMAX film cameras.

Damon takes center stage as Odysseus, the brave and cunning king of Ithaca who gets waylaid for 10 years trying to return home to his loyal wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and dutiful son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), after playing a key role in the Trojan War."After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home," Odysseus says in the trailer. "Not even me."

Along the way, Odysseus crosses paths with mythical creatures like the cyclops Polyphemus, the sweet-voiced but deadly Sirens, and the powerful witch Circe (who infamously turns Odysseus' crewmen into pigs). Meanwhile, back home, Penelope wards off suitors and Telemachus grapples with his father's long absence. The trailer shows Odysseus getting shipwrecked and leading his army against otherworldly foes. It ends with Penelope asking him, "Promise me you will come back." Odysseus: "What if I can't?"

The sprawling cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, and Will Yun Lee.

Nolan, coming off Oscar wins for Best Picture and Best Director for Oppenheimer, also wrote the script for The Odyssey, adapting Homer's millennia-old classic.

The Odyssey hits theaters July 17, 2026. Watch the new trailer above.
