Anne Hathaway is returning to her rightful throne.

Speaking to ** about her role in the highly anticipated sequel *The Devil Wears Prada 2*, the Oscar-winning actress reveals that she's currently working on bringing *The Princess Diaries 3** *to the big screen.

"One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it," Hathaway tells EW while seated next to her *Devil Wears Prada 2* collaborator, Meryl Streep. "[*Devil Wears Prada 2*] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space," she continues, noting that, while filming the sequel across the summer of 2025, "it became impossible to focus on both at the same time."

Now, Hathaway confirms, "the intention is to make *Princess Diaries* hopefully next," though she stresses that a third film in the popular series "is not greenlit or confirmed yet."

Hathaway stresses that she feels "everybody wants it," so she and her team are "chipping away at the script" for the third *Princess Diaries* movie.

"If I learned anything from [*Devil Wears Prada 2*], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park," she says. Streep adds, "You've got to wait for the right script."

EW has reached out to *Princess Diaries* studio Disney for comment.

Hathaway starred in director Garry Marshall's first *Princess Diaries* movie (an adaptation of Meg Cabot's novel) in 2001, in which she appeared as Mia Thermopolis, a high school student who discovers she's the heir to the fictional kingdom of Genovia, which is governed by her royal grandmother (Julie Andrews).

Following the success of the first film, which grossed $165 million at the box office, Hathaway and Andrews reprised their roles in a 2004 sequel that also welcomed new stars like Raven-Symoné.

Of her blockbuster return in *The Devil Wears Prada 2*, the *Mother Mary** *actress — who's also set to appear this summer in Christopher Nolan's *The Odyssey* — additionally tells EW she hopes that audiences find joy in reuniting to watch the continued story of beloved characters.

"What I hope, and I think it’s a fair hope, is that this is a global event at a time when we feel very, very fractured," she says.

*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is in theaters May 1.
